This wasn't so good, and as for the potatoes, I question it, I'm pretty sure it was butter and Cheeze Wiz, with a bit of starch mixed in.

The Buffet

I got this from a buffet that charged you by the pound and I'm pretty sure mashed potatoes contain lead as this meal was over $10!

Pint of blackberries

Pint of blackberries

Definitely the finest I've had, these fresh blackberries picked at Tarara Winery are as good as they look. And that's my opinion before the wine tasting took place. Tarara also makes a great dessert wine, Wild River Red, using these blackberries. From their site:

Wild River Red - Blackberries from our own berry patches are blended with red and white wine to make a popular fruity red wine. Sweet and light, serve this wine lightly chilled with a rich chocolate dessert or as an aperitif.

Scorecard

Can't grade your restaurants without a scorecard! So we found this site that contains the Virginia Health Department inspection reports for all restaurants in Alexandria, VA.

Ironically, Le Rongeur Raide has one of the better records in our neighborhood.

Reports for the rest of the state of Virginia can be accessed off the main VDH page. Alexandria link is now on the Links section on the left of our blog.

If nothing else, reading the reports works better than the Atkins Diet.

Cadbury Picnic Bar

Cadbury Picnic Bar

Unlike many candy bars, the Cadbury Picnic Bar contains raisins. It's quite good, but the caramel leaks out and sticks to the wrapper, making it hard to unwrap and eat neatly. Still recommended.

Hmm boxed food that doesn't need to be refrigerated AND only had 20% of my sodium for the day. It even included a spoon and a tray.

Avoidance

Lunch

Today's attempt to avoid Le Rongeur Raide involves a sandwich, chips, pear, and green iced tea. Not bad at all, but I still need coffee to make my afternoon complete and productive.

Le Rongeur Raide: chicken my ass

Our favorite go-to restaurant on bad-weather days, Le Rongeur Raide, has been experimenting with upgrading their ambience experience recently. They have tried some aroma marketing that we believe has backfired. The smell of something whose soul has shuffled off this mortal coil several days prior has had the opposite effect of what they probably intended. This customer for one may not eat there much anymore. At least now we know why they didn't always have some of the specialty dishes on the menu every day.

I couldn't resist trying this. It's wasabi in a tube! It's creamier than the wasabi you normally get with sushi, and also hotter. Just don't use it as toothpaste by mistake.
